CUSTODIAN/JANITOR (Full time or Part-time)

Location:         Site Level School

Reports To:  School Principal 

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt

Salary Range:  Per WBR Salary Schedule

Terms of Employment:  12 Months

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Principal, the Custodian/Janitor performs manual and custodial work and cleaning and routine maintenance of the schools’ facilities and grounds. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans, vacuums, and dusts classrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium locker and restrooms; washes windows, empties trash cans, and dusts and polishes furniture
  • Sweeps, vacuums, strips, mops, waxes, and buffs floors; sweeps outside pavements
  • Moves desk, furniture, filing cabinets, and other items
  • Stocks restrooms with appropriate supplies
  • Prepares and transports supplies to classrooms
  • Unloads and stocks incoming supplies
  • Prepares facilities for meetings and related functions
  • Locks and unlocks facilities as necessary
  • Assists with the orientation of new workers
  • Provides courteous and prompt service to all internal and external customers
  • Identifies opportunities and recommends methods to improve service, work processes and financial performance.
  • Assists co-workers in the completion of tasks and assignments to ensure continuity of service
  • Orients new co-workers and actively supports teamwork throughout the school system
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the proper authority

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • United States Citizen or authorized alien..
  • Physical and mental stamina and ability to perform job functions, tasks and duties.
  • Any other qualifications as mandated by the West Baton Rouge Parish School System at the time of appointment to this position.

  • High School Diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of training and expertise.

ABILITIES AND SKILLS

      Work Environment:  The custodian will work in an environment adhering to the School Board energy policy. Work will entail outdoor responsibilities. Workday consist of regular school hours or specifically designated part-time hours.  Then length of the workday varies as the result of evening activities or emergencies.  In addition, job responsibilities may require work on weekends or holidays and attendance at meetings.

      Communication Skills The custodian must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing.  Must have ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system and must be able to communicate successfully with students,teachers, parents, school personnel, and the community.

      Equipment Used:  The custodian should be able to use a telephone, audio-visual equipment, and other appropriate cleaning machines and equipment relative to school cleaning and maintenance.

      Physical and Mental Involvement:  The custodian must be able to perform these physical activities: standing, walking, reaching bending, and lifting 60 pounds (sometimes required). The custodian must be able to implement appropriate custodial and maintenance projects. Must be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions. Must keep accurate, up-to-date records.  Must be able to comply with federal, state and parish regulations.

      Human Relations:  The custodian must be able to work cooperatively with district personnel and the community.  Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept commendations and recommendations. Must demonstrate sensitivity/understanding in nterpersonal relations with persons of diverse cultures/backgrounds.
